I think most people think that joy and happiness are the same things. They’re not. They aren’t even necessary for each other. Happiness is a fleeting emotion based on external factors. Joy, real joy, comes from God and the peace he gives.
Marion Ahlers says, “Joy is a choice based on being content regardless of circumstances.” Even in the darkest moments of our life, we can be filled with joy. Joy is born of hope and our hope comes from Christ. Everything is temporary, all the pain is temporary. God gives us peace and hope in the knowledge that the battle is already won for us. Martin Luther once said, “God is not a God of sadness, death, etc., but the devil is. Christ is a God of joy, and so the Scriptures often say that we should rejoice … A Christian should and must be a cheerful person.” We don’t need to feel happy all the time, but joy radiates from the inside.
Happiness is based on other people, our circumstances, our own thoughts. These are fleeting moments in time and are subject to change at a moment’s notice.
There are few things in life that bring me true joy. My God, my family, and the quiet peaceful moments alone with any of those. Despite the tragedies in this life, the pain I’m faced with every day, the decisions other people make that break me down, God’s love and sacrifice bring me a joy I can’t find on my own. I could be in a pit of despair and still feel joy because my God has already conquered all the badness.
Happiness is a lovely feeling despite its shallow roots. So many things bring me happiness. My friends (in that picture we’re about to see Hanson, another thing that makes me happy), music, rain, traveling, funny memes, cooking. This helps make life bearable for me. Even when these fade away and turn to ash, my joy with remain.
Where do you find joy? Happiness?
